SLCC welcomes comments on equalities report to inform planning
The SLCC has been reviewing research on equalities to build a better understanding of what contemporary Scotland looks like.
The work will inform the organisation’s strategy and operational planning in the coming years, as well as work to implement the Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Bill, currently being debated in parliament.
Commenting on the report, CEO Neil Stevenson said, “We want to ensure our services are accessible and fair for all that use them.
“We’ve looked at research on the population as a whole, drawing on the latest census data and respected research from other government organisations and NGOs. We’ve also looked at available data from the professions, and we would especially commend the Law Society of Scotland for its excellent and accessible research in this field.
“No collation of research will ever cover every issue, and we’re well aware of sensitivities around terminology used and the methodologies of different research approaches. However, solving issues involves talking about them, and the aim of the work is dialogue and reflection on our work, and not to suggest a complete and universally accepted picture of diversity can be painted.
“Our staff, managers, and Board have all been involved in identifying research and discussing findings and implications. This in itself has been valuable in helping us reflect on our legal duties and the values and respect we want to bring to our work.
“We’re now inviting comments on the draft report from anyone who may have an interest in this work. If you are able to share other research you think we should also be taking into account, have comments on the research we have included, can think of additional issues we should be considering, or have suggestions for who we could work with on this, we’d really welcome your input. Comments can be sent to consult@scottishlegalcomplaints.org.uk by 30 May 2025.”
