The SLCC has confirmed its plan to deliver a 5% reduction in the levy for solicitors, advocates and commercial attorneys. This is the second year running the SLCC will deliver a reduction in the general levy, and the proposal was welcomed by the Law Society of Scotland in its response to the SLCC’s statutory consultation.

As well as dealing with complaints, the SLCC provides a best practice service for legal practitioners. Today the organisation has published details of its engagement with the profession over the past year.

Rebounding complaint numbers and rising costs means the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission is consulting on a levy for 2023/24 that returns to just below pre-pandemic levels, following two years of cuts.

The SLCC has today published an open letter to the profession on the duty to co-operate to support an efficient and effective complaints system.

As part of its oversight role the SLCC monitors complaints and identifies trends in practice, in relation to how practitioners deal with complaints and the subject of those complaints. This includes undertaking research. The latest research the SLCC is carrying out is into complaints made to, and dealt with, by the legal profession in Scotland.

The SLCC laid its Budget for 2013-2014 before the Scottish Parliament on 29 April 2013.

On Wednesday night, the BBC screened the latest BBC Scotland Investigates: “Lawyers Behaving Badly”. The programme investigated the regulation of the legal profession in Scotland and the role of the different organisations involved. We welcome the programme for raising some important issues.

In June 2012, TNS BMRB produced two reports following research commissioned by the SLCC. Specifically, the research looked at complaint numbers and the methods adopted by practitioners (both solicitors and advocates) in how they handle complaints made against them.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Brackenridge as Chair of the SLCC. The appointment will be for five years. He replaces Jane Irvine, the first Chair of the SLCC, who served from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012.
