Interview Guidance

If you are invited to interview, this is a short guide about what to expect on the day of the interview.

When you arrive, you will be asked to provide ID
  •  
You will normally be met by the line manager for the post, who will take you to the interview room and introduce you to the other panel members

There will normally be 2 or 3 panel members – normally consisting of the line manager, and 1 or 2 other operational managers/members of staff.

 We will normally carry out a competency based interview to help us determine if you fit the values and culture of our organisation.

When answering competency-based questions, try and apply the STAR model to ensure your examples are specific and focused:

Situation– Describe the situation and explain what happened

Task– Outline the task you had to complete and describe your responsibilities

Action– Explain the steps that you took or the decisions you made

Result– Explain the outcomes of your actions and what you learnt from the experience

Other things to remember when answering questions at interview are:

Think before you answer a question; take the time you need to collect your thoughts

Ask for clarification if you do not understand a question
  •  
Do not evade or bluff through a question
  •  
Stick to the point, and do not begin to ramble
  •  
Say if you don’t know the answer
  •  
Stop and start your answer again if you think you are on the wrong track, but don’t do this too often. Explain your reasoning

Do not make exaggerated claims or oversell yourself

 You may notice the Panel making notes whilst you respond, this is totally normal and you should not be put off. We are simply recording key information from your responses so that we have accurate information when we discuss your interview at the end. It is also useful for us to be able to give you constructive feedback if you are unsuccessful.

 At the end of the interview, the Panel will give you an estimated time as to when you will find out if you have been successful at interview or not. If you have been successful, the hiring manager will contact you with a verbal offer. If you have been unsuccessful, you will be advised by email but you can request feedback on your interview, which will be provided by the hiring manager using the notes they took at interview.
